Project Background

Townsville City Council is undertaking management works at the Corica Street drain and Horseshoe Bay Lagoon on Magnetic Island.

During the significant rainfall events of 2024/25, sediment washed through the Corica Street drainage system and into the Horseshoe Bay Lagoon. The build-up of sediment has affected the condition of the lagoon and surrounding wetland area.

The upcoming works will remove this accumulated sediment to improve water flow, support the health of the lagoon and prepare the area for future community-led revegetation activities.

Council recognises the strong community interest in Horseshoe Bay Lagoon and is working with local stakeholders to support its future management.

Council has been liaising with multiple State agencies, who are currently considering the long-term management objectives for Horseshoe Bay Lagoon, including the desired future ecological condition of the wetland. The community-led and citizen-science investigations which have been and continue to be undertaken are being considered as a part of the state-government and Council’s actions into the future.

Project Overview

The project includes sediment removal from Horseshoe Bay Lagoon and sections of the Corica Street drain system, as well as minor revegetation works to help stabilise drain banks and improve water quality.

A local Magnetic Island contractor has been appointed to undertake the works. Sediment removed during the project will be transported to an approved disposal site and reused where suitable.

Council continues to work with community stakeholders and explore external funding opportunities that may support future restoration initiatives in the area.

Detailed information about the construction activities, timing and potential impacts is available in the Works Notification available for download on this page.
