Project Background

Every day, around 15,773 vehicles travel along Hugh and Gulliver Streets.

This same stretch of road also has high pedestrian and cyclist numbers, peaking in the morning and afternoon, driven by Pimlico State High School and TAFE Townsville (Pimlico) campus students. Add to this a high number of residential dwellings and the various commercial shops at the intersection of Hugh and Woolcock Streets, cyclists routinely mix with motorists on-road as there are only partially constructed footpaths on the verge and no separate cycle facility.

The active transport facilities upgrade intends to improve the safety, efficiency, and functionality of Gulliver and Hugh Streets for pedestrians and cyclists.

Project Overview

Townsville City Council plans to construct new active transport facilities along Hugh and Gulliver Streets between Woolcock Street and Ross River Road.

As part of this project, Council will construct 2.5km of 2.5m-wide shared pathway, 1.5m-wide footpath sections and line mark on-road bicycle lanes.

Additionally, we will install:

  • raised priority crossings at minor road intersections
  • a signalised SMART pedestrian crossing near the Wellington Street Intersection.

Works will include:

  • replacing sections of existing driveways
  • reconstructing driveways, driveway crossovers, and associated kerb and channel
  • constructing concrete medians, cycle, and pedestrian ramps.

With the objective to:

  1. Increase the visibility of pedestrian and cyclist presence along Gulliver Street and Hugh Street
  2. Improve road crossing opportunities for both pedestrians and cyclists by providing improved and safer infrastructure
  3. Minimise disruption to traffic and resulting social costs by reducing the number of severities of cyclist-vehicle crashes.
