Wulguru Water Main Upgrade

Project Overview

Townsville City Council is upgrading a section of water main in Wulguru to help provide a more reliable water supply for residents and businesses.

The existing water main along Stuart Drive was installed in the 1950s and is reaching the end of its service life.

To reduce the risk of future failures and maintain a reliable water supply, Council is constructing a new water main along Stuart Drive between Hynch Street and McCahill Street, connecting to previously renewed sections of the water main. Once complete, the new water main will replace the existing pipeline, which will be decommissioned.

Why is this work needed?

The existing water main is reaching the end of its service life.

Replacing the pipeline will:

• improve the reliability of the local water network
• reduce the risk of water main breaks and unplanned interruptions
• maintain a safe and high-quality water supply
• support the needs of the growing community
• ensure critical infrastructure continues to meet current standards.

Council has prioritised this project and allocated funding to support works that commenced in the previous financial year and to complete the remaining works during the current financial year.

What works are coming up?

Works will involve the construction of a new water main and associated infrastructure along Stuart Drive between Hynch Street and McCahill Street, connecting to previously renewed sections of the water main.

Construction activities include:

• installation of a new water main using a combination of open trench and trenchless construction methods
• underbore installation of pipeline sections beneath Stuart Drive, including temporary entry and exit pits
• connection of the new pipeline to the existing water network
• upgrades to valves, fittings, and other water infrastructure
• testing and commissioning of the new pipeline
• restoration of affected roads, footpaths, and surrounding areas.

Project timing
Construction commenced on Tuesday 5 May 2026 and is expected to take approximately six months to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Works are being delivered in stages to help reduce impacts on residents, businesses and road users while maintaining access and water services wherever possible.

Council will continue to provide updates throughout construction and will notify nearby residents and businesses of any significant changes to the schedule or upcoming activities.
