Project Overview

Townsville City Council is resurfacing the Reid Park V8 Circuit to ensure it remains safe, reliable and ready to host major motorsport events into the future.

After 18 years of use, inspections identified cracking and surface deterioration across sections of the circuit. To maintain performance and safety standards, Council will resurface all Council-managed and jointly managed Townsville City Council and Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) sections of the circuit.

Works are expected to be completed by October 2026.

Why are these works needed?

The Reid Park V8 Circuit is one of Townsville's most significant sporting and tourism assets, attracting competitors, spectators and visitors from across Australia each year.

An inspection of the circuit identified signs of wear and ageing, including cracking and surface damage. Resurfacing the circuit now will help maintain safety, improve durability and ensure the track continues to meet the high standards required for future racing events.

What works are coming up?

Council and contractor Boral will undertake a range of resurfacing activities, including:

  • asphalt mix trials to test materials and construction methods before major works begin
  • milling and removing sections of the existing road surface
  • laying new race-grade asphalt
  • compacting and finishing the surface to meet racing performance standards
  • reinstating line marking and other associated infrastructure.

Project Timing

Traffic Impacts and Road Closures

Traffic management will be in place throughout construction to keep workers and road users safe.

Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians may experience:

  • temporary road closures
  • changed traffic conditions
  • reduced speed limits
  • traffic control and detours
  • minor delays when travelling through the area
  • temporary changes to parking and roadside access.

Planned Road Closures

Stage 1

Dates: 20-31 July 2026

Charters Towers Road (outbound) temporary road closure.

Stage 2

Dates: 21-25 August 2026

Full closure of Boundary Street and the Charters Towers Road intersection from the night of 21 August to the night of 23 August, reopening on the morning of 24 August.

Night-time lane closures on Boundary Street from 24-25 August.

Road users are encouraged to plan ahead, follow traffic control directions and allow extra travel time during construction.

Construction Impacts

While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, nearby residents, businesses and visitors may notice:

  • Construction crews, heavy vehicles and equipment operating in the area.
  • Increased noise, dust and vibration during works.
  • Changes to access arrangements as construction progresses.
  • Temporary parking restrictions in some locations.

Council appreciates the community's patience while these important works are completed.

Project Benefits

Once complete, the project will:

  • extend the life of the Reid Park Circuit
  • improve surface quality, safety and performance
  • ensure the circuit remains suitable for future motorsport events
  • support Townsville's visitor economy and major events industry
  • protect an important community and tourism asset for years to come.
