Winifred Street Flood Improvement Project

Project Background

There are several properties near Brownhill and Winifred Streets in Mundingburra that experience regular flooding.

When this area was originally developed, only minimal earthworks were carried out. As a result, there are low-lying sections that rely on pipe systems draining to the Ross River. When the underground drainage system reaches capacity during heavy rain, water collects in these low points and can overflow into other lower areas within the suburb.

Council investigations have found that adding extra pipe capacity and improving flow to the Ross River will help reduce these overflows, benefiting properties near Brownhill and Winifred Streets as well as other surrounding areas.

This project is part of Council’s stormwater Capital Works program, designed to address and improve drainage across Council’s networks, and raise the quality of life for residents.

Project Overview

This project involves installing additional stormwater pipes along Winifred Street, discharging into the Ross River to increase drainage capacity and reduce flooding issues in the surrounding area, including Tertius Street, Kane Street, and Love Lane. The works include clearing vegetation along the riverbank, constructing a temporary access track for machinery, installing a new outlet into the Ross River, and laying reinforced concrete pipes along Winifred Street from Brownhill Street to the river. Numerous side inlet pits will be added at intersections to capture stormwater flow, along with a pit in the low-lying park area beside #38 Winifred Street. Once construction is complete, the area will be revegetated with tree planting and landscaping where required.
