Project Background
The Nelly Bay Boardwalk is a popular waterfront pathway used by residents and visitors to walk, exercise and enjoy the beautiful views of Magnetic Island.
Regular inspections have identified significant deterioration in one section of the boardwalk due to the harsh coastal environment. To keep the boardwalk safe and reliable for the community, Townsville City Council is renewing part of the structure and carrying out repairs to other sections.
These works will help ensure the boardwalk can continue to be enjoyed for years to come.
Project Overview
Council is renewing the Nelly Bay Boardwalk to improve safety, extend the life of the structure and reduce future maintenance requirements. The new materials have been selected to better withstand the coastal environment and provide a more durable boardwalk for the community.
What Works Are Coming Up?
Works on the Nelly Bay Boardwalk Renewal Project are about to begin.
The project will be delivered in stages, with works on Sections 2 and 3 starting on Thursday 3 September 2026. Construction on Section 1 will begin on Friday 18 September 2026.
Upcoming activities include:
- repairs to handrails and other boardwalk components in Sections 2 and 3
- removal of the existing boardwalk structure in Section 1
- construction of a new fibre composite boardwalk designed to better withstand coastal conditions
- installation of new structural components and finishes
- site clean-up and reinstatement works.
The community may notice increased construction activity, temporary changes to pedestrian access and construction noise while these works are underway. Council and its contractor will work to minimise impacts wherever possible.

During construction, residents and visitors may notice:
- construction crews and equipment within the work area
- temporary changes to pedestrian access
- construction noise during approved working hours
- temporary fencing and safety barriers around active work zones.
