Waste facilities open for free this weekend

Council will offer free access to all its waste facilities this weekend during Free Tip Weekend.

The annual pre-cyclone spring clean will run for four days, Friday, October 30 to Monday, November 2.

Residents will have unlimited free dumping access to dispose of domestic and green waste only at the Jensen, Hervey Range, Stuart, Toomulla and Bluewater facilities as well as the new Magnetic Island waste facility.

Regular fees apply for the disposal of tyres, commercial and construction waste.

Waste and Water Committee chair Cr Ray Gartrell said the four days were the perfect opportunity to clean up the yard of palm fronds and branches that may cause damage during storms.

"It’s also a great reason to do a spring clean of your residence and ensure your property is prepared ahead of cyclone season," he said.

Last year’s event, which was held over only three days, saw more than 1300 tonnes of waste taken to the city’s facilities with nearly 8000 transactions.

Residents are advised to appropriately cover their loads to avoid littering from utes and trailers.
