Mayor to launch Christmas Tree Appeal

Date published: 12 August 2016

The annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal will be launched at a networking evening later this month to kick-start the campaign to put food on the table for families this Christmas.

The event, to be held at Townsville RSL on Wednesday, August 24 will be the official start of the appeal which hopes to raise $110,000 in cash, gifts and food donations this year.

Mayor Jenny Hill said council was again seeking the help of the community.

“This past year has been tough for some individuals and Townsville families and the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal aims to make the festive season brighter for those who have been struggling,” Cr Hill said.

“This year our key fundraising activity will be a dodger raffle, with some great prize packs on offer. Tickets are only $2.

“We hope schools, daycare centres, community groups and the business sector can take up the challenge to raise the most amount, whether it be money, food or gifts, with great prizes on offer for the winners.”

Cr Hill said she hoped the public could pitch in to help those in need.

“I know things are tough for everyone at the moment but please do what you can to make Christmas brighter for those in the community who are really struggling,” she said.

Townsville RSL General Manager Karla Malouf said the appeal was an important one for the RSL.

“With the economic issues facing an ever growing number of Townsville residents, the Mayors Christmas Tree Appeal brings a smile and a much welcome sigh of relief to many families,” Ms Malouf said.

“We at the Townsville RSL are proud to continue our long time support of the Mayors Christmas Tree Appeal and look forward to helping many families at such an important time of the year.”

The launch will be held at Lavarack’s Restaurant, Townsville RSL on August 24 at 6pm.

Tickets are $45 and include a welcome drink and canapés, plus a sneak preview of the upcoming NQOMT musical Rock of Ages.
