Townsville Seniors of the Year honoured for outstanding efforts

Two Townsville seniors have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to the community at the annual Seniors Luncheon at Townsville Stadium.
Long-time social worker Madge Sceriha was today named the Female Senior of the Year for 2016.
Ms Sceriha has many years of invaluable experience and expertise in the field of social work, having worked tirelessly in the community sector for most of her adult life. At 81, Ms Sceriha is still volunteering her time for a number of local organisations, most notably she is the president of the Townsville Regional Committee on the Ageing (TRCOTA).
Male Senior of the Year for 2016 is John Johnson. Mr Johnson has a considerable volunteering background that includes volunteering in policing through mentoring participants and staff, linking students with TAFE, supporting the attainment of Certificate I in Hospitality for students who are at risk of disengagement from education and engagement in youth justice pathways.

Deputy Mayor Les Walker announced the winners at the annual Seniors Luncheon at Townsville Stadium today.
“We congratulate all of today’s nominees for their contributions to our community and for all the work that often goes on behind the scenes,” Cr Walker said.
“Madge and John are shining examples of the kind of dedication and self-less work that makes our community great.”
