Rockpool closed due to seasonal algal bloom

Date published: 1 December 2016

Algal bloom has forced the closure of the Rockpool on The Strand this morning.

Council crews will drain the pool today before undertaking cleaning tomorrow.

The algae has blown into the Rockpool as the water is drawn from the bay, which usually experiences blooms at this time of year.

The Rockpool will reopen when water quality in the bay improves and the pool can be safely refilled.

Council are monitoring the situation and are undertaking water quality testing.

Signage has been installed at the Rockpool to advise people of the closure. Lifeguards will also inform visitors.

It follows an outbreak of marine cyanobacteria, trichodesmium in September.
