Time capsule to offer snapshot of city's past and present

Date published: 22 December 2016

A snapshot of the past 150 years and highlights of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations will be among items sealed in a new time capsule.

The ceremonial sealing will happen as part of council’s New Year’s Eve event at Strand Park and will bring council’s T150 calendar of events to an end.

The time capsule will be placed in its new home next to Victoria Bridge in the new year, and will be opened in 150 years – 2166.

The capsule was launched earlier in the year, with sponsors and the public invited to make suggestions for items for inclusion.

Some of the 150 items include a JCU mortarboard, Cowboys supporters gear, 2016/17 Yellow Pages, CityLibraries T150 Education Kit, Townsville community profiles, maps, various publications and programs, as well as souvenirs of our city.

Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the sealing of the time capsule was a highlight of the T150 program.

“We’ve had an incredible year celebrating our city’s 150th birthday and this time capsule is a fantastic way to preserve our past and present for the future generations of our residents,” Cr Walker said.

“The year has seen some major highlights such as the T150 Defence Force Air Show and Townsville Bulletin Sky Show, the Port of Townsville Gala Dinner Under the Stars and the T150 Yarns Series.

“It’s exciting to imagine what our city will look like in 150 years, and what the residents will think when they open the contents of the time capsule and see what was happening here and what we achieved in 2016.”

Thanks to the official T150 sponsors: Defence Air Force, Townsville Bulletin, 4TOFM, James Cook University, Port of Townsville, Yellow Pages and Rydges Southbank Townsville.
