Townsville CBD lights up for Christmas event

Date published: 1 December 2016

Townsville’s CBD will turn into a sparkling winter wonderland tomorrow with Christmas lights, real Christmas trees, Santa, snow and fairies bringing Christmas cheer to Flinders St.

The Townsville City Council event from 4-8pm will also feature the Central Christmas Markets, HotFM Food Truck Fiesta, live entertainment and free Timmy the Train rides.

A highlight of the event will be when Mayor Jenny Hill turns on the city’s new Christmas lights at 7pm.

Divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said an array of new Christmas lights had been installed over the past week including fairy lights in two large fig trees, lights on flag poles along Flinders Street and large stars, presents and waterfall lights at the Stanley and Denham street intersections of Flinders Street.

The 6m Christmas tree and decorations have also been erected at Townsville Bulletin Square.

“We really wanted to bring the Christmas spirit to the CBD and bring some joy to the residents and businesses at this time of year,” Cr Greaney said.

“We hope this event brings lots of families in to the city with lots on offer for everyone.”

A special Winter Wonderland will be set up with Elsa from Frozen, snow to build snowmen, face painting, craft activities and a real Christmas tree forest.

Santa will be in his sleigh from 5-7pm.

Kids can jump on the Frozen jumping castle and get a snow cone for a gold coin donation to the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal or with a coupon from the Townsville Bulletin between 26 November – 2 December.

The free event will be from 4pm-8pm, Friday, December 2.
