Support for bowls club lease to transfer to council
Date published: 11 February 2016
Council’s Sport, Recreation and Parks Committee today recommended council take up the lease of the former Townsville City Bowls Club at 8 The Strand, after the club ceased operations in December.
Committee chair Cr Pat Ernst said the lot had strategic importance to council.
“Council had worked with the bowls club in an attempt to keep the club viable, however membership had been in steady decline over the years and they made the decision to close the doors at the end of 2015,” he said.
“The club has since requested that the council take up the lease from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, which does not expire until 2024.
“For council, this land is in a prime position for future uses and there could be some exciting prospects for the Strand and links to the CBD revitalisation.
“It’s therefore strategically important for council to step up and take on the lease.”
The recommendation will go to full council on February 23.
