Budget - Events calendar features big T150 celebration

Date published: 6 July 2016

This year’s T150 Defence Force Airshow and Townsville Bulletin Skyshow on the Strand is the headline act in a year of events funded in a tight 2016/17 City Budget.

A specular finale to the city’s 150 anniversary celebrations, the October 15 Airshow is part of a $2.2 million budget for public and civic events over the next year.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the Airshow would be a memorable event for the community.

“The Skyshow and Airshow will be the biggest show in town and a fitting way for the community to come together to celebrate the T150,” Cr Doyle said.

“We’re expecting tens of thousands of residents from Townsville and the region, making it one of the largest events in the city in years.

“This year the events program has been subject to almost $230,000 in cutbacks because of the tough budget constraints, but we are making sure funding is maintained for priority events that support the city’s lifestyle.”

Council will present more than 35 significant events including ANZAC Day and Australia Day, Carols by Candlelight, New Year’s Eve, Heritage Day and Eco Fiesta in the coming financial year.

The City Budget also funds a vibrant arts and cultural calendar.

A total of 70 exhibitions featuring local national and international artists will feature at the city’s premier galleries, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and Pinnacles Gallery, as well as creative spaces.

The city’s three theatres as well as outdoor performance spaces will continue to offer a host of live performances from headline companies including Circus Oz, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Opera Queensland and Australian Dance Theatre.

Local schools and amateur performance groups receive top billing at the Townsville Civic Theatre with the space devoted to community groups some 35 weeks of the year.
