Faces of the past bring city's history into the future

Date published: 2 June 2016

The faces of a bygone era will soon appear all over the city as Townsville City Council continues the T150 celebrations.

Gallery Services, together with LensCap – a collective associated with ABC Open – will install temporary photographic paste-ups in various locations around Townsville in June as part of the Families of Townsville project.

The photographs depict portraits of the founding families of Townsville and will be located in the suburb after whom they are named, or where their family had direct influence.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the project was timed to coincide with the city-wide celebration of portraiture, The Percivals, and also link in with Townsville’s T150 year.

“This is a significant year for our city, as it celebrates 150 years of municipality,” Cr Doyle said.

“This project will bring some of the city’s past to life and help put a face to the names of the suburbs and streets that we drive through every day, mostly not knowing the history or origin of the names,” Cr Doyle said.

“This is a wonderful project that will share the past with a new generation of residents.”
