Two proposals for new food and drink businesses in Townsville have received the green light from the city’s planning committee.

Townsville City Council’s Planning and Development Committee today recommended the approval of a new development in Condon that will house a fast food outlet alongside a Zarraffa’s Coffee at the corner of Gouldian Avenue and Riverway Drive.

A separate application for a new convenience store and cafe with a skate park and multi-use recreational area on Toolakea Beach Rd in the Bluewater area was also supported.

Committee chairman Cr Les Walker said today’s decisions would support new business opportunities in the city.

“We want to get behind good development that will contribute to economic activity in the city,” Cr Walker said.

“The development application for the food and drink outlets at Condon represents a significant investment in the city and will support jobs.

“Further out of the city the Bluewater and Toolakea Beach area doesn’t currently have a have a local store operating, so the application to develop a shop and café will be a welcome addition to the community.

“The developer also proposes to construct a skate park and a multi-use recreational area as part of the complex, which will be an added attraction for local young people.”

The Condon proposal comprises the construction of drive-through food and coffee outlets side by side in new purpose built facilities, with 34 car parks for in store customers.

Conditions include a requirement for improvements to the intersection of Goudlian Avenue and Riverway Drive for traffic management. Noise barriers are also proposed up to 2.4m on the property boundary with the adjacent premises.

The committee’s recommendations to approve the applications will go the full council on June 28 for formal approval.
