Safe flame candles bring Christmas cheer

Townsville will be shining brightly for a good cause at this year’s Carols By Candlelight concert.

The ever-popular safe flame candles will again be a colourful feature of the event at Reid Park on December 4, with proceeds of the sale of the candles going to the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal.

National Australia Bank has again come on board as a sponsor, with candles available to purchase from all NAB branches prior to the event.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the safe flame candles added to the special atmosphere of Carols By Candlelight, but were also a great keepsake at the end of the evening.

“Last year we sold 3000 candles on the night, and many in the lead up to the event, which was a great boost to the appeal,” Cr Hill said.

“Money raised through sales will purchase food hampers to assist local families in need.

“Purchasing a $3 candle is just one way to make a contribution to the appeal, you can also drop food and gift donations into the red bins at shopping centres, schools, businesses and at council’s Customer Service Centres, donate cash via council’s website or purchase a ticket in the raffle which has $10,000 in prizes on offer.”

NAB Regional Executive Retail, Wayne Tawse, said the NAB team in Townsville was excited to get involved and give back to the community.

“This is the first year NAB has been involved, and as well as a donation, we’re really excited to take part on the night to help sell the candles,” Mr Tawse said.

“At NAB we believe that good business means supporting the communities in which we live and work. We understand that Christmas can be a difficult time for families in need so we are proud of our people, and our customers, for showing compassion and supporting the families who need it most.

“We encourage NAB customers and members of the public to dig deep this festive season and visit any one of our branches in the Townsville area to purchase a candle.”

The candles cost $3 each and are available at all NAB branches, council’s Customer Service Centre at 103 Walker St and at the Carols By Candlelight event.
