The National Capital Authority (NCA) is touring its educational travelling exhibition Brick by Brick: Build Your Own Capital to its next destination of Townsville, in partnership with the CityLibraries in Flinders Street.

Brick by Brick is a hands-on educational exhibition that includes 30,000 LEGOTM bricks and construction sheets that gets children and adults creating replicas of their favourite buildings in their National Capital, Canberra.

“Canberra is the heart of our nation and is a remarkable bush city,” Minister for Local Government and Territories Fiona Nash said.

“Brick by Brick encourages children and their families to learn more about Australia’s capital and explore what they would want to see in the Canberra of tomorrow.”

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair, Councillor Colleen Doyle, said the exhibition was sure to be popular with visitors of all ages, but was especially aimed at primary school-aged students.

“LEGO is a perennial favourite for children and parents alike, and I’ve no doubt this feature will spark the creative interest of our city’s youngsters,” Cr Doyle said.

“By bringing this exhibition to Townsville, it will help connect North Queensland to our nation’s capital, Canberra, which is important to all Australians as the home to our Federal Parliament.”

The touring exhibition is designed for children from four years of age and is suitable for a range of abilities and teaches them to build iconic structures like Parliament House and the National Carillon using construction sheets.

The exhibition has already visited libraries in Bendigo, Port Macquarie, Lismore, Tweed Heads, Murwillumbah, Hervey Bay, Mackay, Bundaberg, Gladstone and Rockhampton, and a separate exhibition is also currently touring towns in Western Australia.

Brick by Brick: Build Your Own Capital officially opens to the public at CityLibraries in Flinders Street in Townsville on 28 July and is open until 1 October 2017.
