Townsville City Council has approved a $30 million retail development on Riverway Drive in Rassmussen – which will support up to 200 jobs during construction.

The Riverway Plaza is a new shopping centre development that will be built over two stages and includes new and expanded retail stores and food and drink outlets.

Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the development will boost the economy and create jobs for locals.

“The Riverway Plaza development is expected to support up to 200 jobs during the construction phase,” Cr Walker said.

“Further ongoing jobs will be created when the project is complete and new shops and cafes are ready to start trading.”

Cr Walker said the project is a vote of confidence in the future of our economy.

“Businesses are showing faith in the Townsville economy and opening up their chequebooks to invest and create local jobs,” Cr Walker said.

“Construction is expected to start later this year or early next year, with plenty of job opportunities for locals.”

Local Councillor Mark Molachino said the Upper Ross was a growing area of Townsville and new projects such as Riverway Plaza would cater to that growth.

“There’s a lot of opportunities in the Upper Ross and this is a major development, which will create up to 200 jobs during the construction phase alone,” Cr Molachino said.
