Junior athletes encouraged to apply for elite training experience

Elite junior athletes are being urged to register for a rare chance to train with fitness experts from the North Queensland Cowboys.
Townsville City Council is giving talented athletes from all sports an opportunity to ‘Train With The Elite’ at 1300SMILES Stadium on 9 July.
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said ‘Train With The Elite’ is a great opportunity to learn from leading high-performance coaches.
“We have a lot of gifted junior athletes in the city and they all have dedicated coaches but I’d encourage them to register to ‘Train With The Elite’ experts from the North Queensland Cowboys,” Cr Doyle said.
“The Cowboys are the highest profile team in North Queensland and the club has some of the best sporting minds in the country.
“They can help girls and boys take their game to the next level in any sport.”
Local Councillor Russ Cook said the Cowboys have strong links to grassroots sport.
“The Cowboys have created exciting pathways for homegrown rugby league players and ‘Train With The Elite’ could be a major stepping stone for children from a wide range of sports,” Cr Cook said.
“They’ll be training with leading coaches and they’ll pick up new drills and information they can take back to their sport.
“The session will cover a wide range of drills including speed and agility, strength and conditioning and injury prevention.
“’Train With The Elite’ will also be a great learning experience for Townsville coaches who are looking for new ways to help their teams and clubs.
“Coaches can chat to the Cowboys high-performance staff and they’ll leave the stadium with a USB stick so they can keep accessing the information – and share it with their players, athletes and coaches.”
The workshop from 4:30 – 5:30pm on 9 July is limited to one athlete and coach per sporting club.
Registrations close on 3 July
