Splish, splash: Council pools to re-open

Townsville residents can get back in the swim of things from tomorrow with Council pools set to re-open.

Council Sport and Recreation Committee chairperson Maurie Soars today confirmed that Long Tan Memorial Pool and Kokoda Memorial Pool would re-open tomorrow (16 May) and the Northern Beaches Leisure Centre would re-open on Monday (18 May).

“Townsville residents love taking to the water for exercise or to just relax,” Cr Soars said.

“Unfortunately, Council was forced to close our pools and water parks to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“However, with the State Government easing coronavirus-related restrictions, we are now able to re-open our pools in Heatley (Long Tan), Mundingburra (Kokoda) and Burdell (Northern Beaches Leisure Centre).”

Each pool will have its own plan to ensure appropriate distancing, so members of the public are encouraged to call before attending.

The Riverway Lagoons and Rockpool on The Strand will remain closed until either a COVID Safe Plan is approved or stage 2 of the easing of restrictions. The Strand Water Park will also remain closed to allow Council to undertake repairs and maintenance.

“We have done a fantastic job slowing the spread of COVID-19 in our community, however we cannot afford to become complacent,” Cr Soars said.

“I urge the Townsville community to keep maintaining social distancing and enhanced hygiene practices and if you’re feeling sick stay home and call 13HEALTH or your doctor for advice.”
