Art in the Park takes NAFA COVID Safe into the suburbs

Learn how to dance, perform and create as part of the brand new NAFA COVID Safe event Art in the Park.

Art in the Park will combine workshops inside three community centres across the city with outdoor performances for three consecutive weekends.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said there was something for everyone at Art in the Park.

“Art in the Park will run on a booking system and will include workshops held inside the Oonoonba, Heatley and Riverside Gardens community centres, as well as outdoor performances,” Cr Greaney said.

“There are some really exciting workshops, including making eco-friendly earrings with Alison McDonald, creating recycled instruments with Gypsy Sounds Entertainment and taking part in Indian classical dance classes with Geetha’s Natyalaya.

“There will also be roving performers outside and food trucks, which means it’s the perfect day out for the whole family.”

Artist Alison McDonald is hosting Eco-Friendly Earrings workshops, and said these were the perfect workshops for people with no jewellery-making experience.

“The earrings are made using plastic PET bottles, because they’re so light and colourful. We’ll be cutting them up and threading them onto earrings to make colourful, dangly, light and easy-to-wear earrings,” she said.

“People can just sit down with no prior knowledge. I will supply pliers, I will show them how to use a drill to put a hole in the plastic. People realise that it’s not so hard and that they can do it, and they leave with a new skill.”

Cr Greaney said registering for Art in the Park sessions was essential.

“We have a booking system in place to ensure these events remain COVID-safe, and so the venues can be cleaned between booking sessions,” she said.

“Each location will be activated between 9am and 5pm, and will allow each group 1 hour and 45 minutes on-site per booking.

“Being COVID-safe is essential to Council, and that’s why we are encouraging all attendees to practice social distancing and good hygiene, including washing and sanitising hands frequently.”

Art in the Park will run on Saturday 10 October, Saturday 17 October and Saturday 24 October at Oonoonba, Heatley and Riverside Gardens community centres.
