Australia’s biggest second-hand treasure hunt is returning to Townsville next weekend with Townsville City Council encouraging locals to see if the age old saying that “one person’s trash is another’s treasure” really does sing true.
Mayor Troy Thompson said residents could register to be part of the Australia-wide event that will see Townsville host two weekends of garage sale goodness.
“Everyone secretly loves a garage sale, so the nation-wide Garage Sale Trail is a great way to scratch that itch, when it comes to finding a bargain over two weekends,” Cr Thompson said.
“These events help give items a new lease of life, reduce the number of items going to landfill and allows people to find some truly unique and wonderful items, while helping people clear out their homes of any unwanted items of value.
“As Marie Kondo famously said, “does it spark joy? If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it…”. But rather than disposing it, perhaps hold your own garage sale and help those items find a new loving home.”
Councillor Thompson said for those bargain hunters, the Garage Sale Trail would kick off on Saturday, 9 November, and be spread over two weekends.
“Whether you’re a spur of the moment shopper or plan your weekends well in advance, there is plenty of time to check out what the trail offers on either the 9-10 November, the 16-17 November, or both,” Cr Thompson said.
Support for the Garage Sale Trail is one of the initiatives Council has backed to reduce the number of items going to landfill, with more than 150 garage sales hosted by residents across two weekends last year.
“Through programs like our education campaigns, landfill diversion practices, and innovations in resource recovery we were able to divert more than one-hundred thousand tonnes of material from going to landfill in the last financial year,” Cr Thompson said.
“By backing programs like the Garage Sale Trail, we can create a circular economy and move towards zero waste.”
