Traffic changes signal start of Supercars set up
Date published: 23 June 2026
Works are revving up to prepare for the NTI Townsville 500 with traffic management setting up at Charters Towers Road and Boundary Street.
To get ready for the massive Supercars Championship event, Council will be rolling out nightworks from 6pm tomorrow through to 3am this Saturday to install the event’s track and infrastructure. These works will be followed by a road closure along sections of the track from Friday 3 July until the dismantle works are completed following the event.
Mayor Nick Dametto said these were important works to help support this major event on its annual return to Townsville.
“Hosting the Supercars’ NTI Townsville 500 is one the biggest inclusions on our city’s annual events calendar. Supercars continuously chooses to return to Townsville and goes to show that our city is open for business and ready to lead as the events capital of Northern Australia,” Cr Dametto said.
“To bring this event to life, there will be traffic management on the ground while the racetrack precinct is prepped and ready for action.
“Plenty of our community members are used to working around these road closures, but for anyone who’s new to driving in the area, we just ask that you slow down and follow any detour directions in place. Thanks to everyone for their patience as our team gets this important work done.”
As part of these works, access to the TicketShop Box Office counter at Townsville Civic Theatre will be closed to customers from Friday 3 July until the dismantle works are completed after the event. Customers will still be able to book tickets over the phone by calling 4727 9797 or online by visiting ticketshop.townsville.qld.gov.au.
Council will be putting a regulated parking zone throughout the racetrack precinct to keep residents who live in the area from being impacted by event parking.
Nightworks at Charters Towers Road and Boundary Street will run from 6pm tomorrow through to 3am on Saturday.
