Townsville Local Disaster Management Group moves to Lean Forward

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group has moved to Lean Forward as Tropical Cyclone Owen intensifies in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Townsville Local Disaster Management Group Deputy Chair Cr Kurt Rehbein said weather predictions show Tropical Cyclone Owen weakening after crossing the coast but residents should still remain vigilant.

“There’s the potential for significant rainfall over Townsville, particularly on Saturday, and residents in low-lying areas should take the usual precautions,” Cr Rehbein said.

“Prepare your home, ensure you have a cyclone kit that is well stocked and never drive on flooded roads.”

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) will meet tomorrow to examine the most up-to-date weather predictions and data.

Cr Rehbein said the TLDMG will advise residents of any important information about Tropical Cyclone Owen when necessary.

“Extreme weather is a part of living in the tropics and we’re no strangers to a lot of rain here in Townsville,” Cr Rehbein.

“Anyone wanting to stay up to date should visit Council’s Emergency Management Dashboard.”
