Townsville City Council has approved a development application for a new funeral parlour in Railway Estate.

Deputy Mayor and Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the proposed development includes a funeral home and chapel but not a crematorium.

“The proposed development will refurbish an existing building on Railway Avenue in Railway Estate to establish the new funeral parlour,” Cr Walker said.

“The majority of the works from this development application relate to refitting the building internally.

“The proposal includes 26 new car spaces in a parcel of vacant land next to the building.”

Cr Walker said the proponents of the development scrapped its application for a crematorium.

“Local residents can be assured that no crematorium will be built on this location from this Council approval,” Cr Walker said.

The development is located in a low impact industry zone and was approved at today’s Full Council meeting.
