Townsville City Council’s Animal Care and Adoption Centre is reducing the cost of animals as it moves from being open for general access to being open by appointment only.

These new measures have been put into place to adhere to the Australian Government’s new social distancing restrictions while also ensuring animals at the Centre can still be adopted.

Dogs and puppies now cost $80 to be adopted, while cats and kittens cost $30.

A Council spokesperson said these measures would assist in slowing the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

“The Animal Care and Adoption Centre is an important part of our community, and we want to be able to continue to deliver this service during this pandemic,” the spokesperson said.

“The centre is now open by appointment only. Anyone who wants to add an animal to their family can visit the Council website to take a look at the cats and dogs available for adoption.

“To visit the Centre, call 0457 769 362 and make an appointment with our staff members.”

The spokesperson said staff at the Centre were adhering to social distancing rules and had physical measures in place to assist visitors to stick to these guidelines.

“Council will also be providing free registration for dogs and up to two cats to assist pet owners during the current climate,” they said.

“To register your cat, call 13 48 10 and our staff members will be able to process the registration. To register your dog, either call 13 48 10 or visit the Council website.

“Lost pets will still be looked after at the Centre and will be displayed on the Council website. Reclaiming a lost pet is now free and is done by appointment.

“Council strongly encourages owners to make sure pets have identification at all times, including a Council registration tag, phone number tag and microchip to ensure they can be dropped home.”

The Animal Care and Adoption Centre is open by appointment from 9am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday. The Centre is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
