Go green for the day at Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre
Date published: 5 December 2025
Locals looking to live more sustainably and families seeking a wholesome morning out are in for a treat, with the gates to Council’s Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre due to be thrown open this weekend.
Council is inviting residents to head along to this popular and free family-friendly event on Saturday from 8-11am.
Attendees will have a chance to explore the Sustainability Centre’s wetland and woodland boardwalk, along with the Centre’s educational landscape.
There will be native plants for home gardens available for free whilst stocks last, and those keen to trade in their old sprinkler heads for a new, water-wise upgrade are invited to bring them along.
A free sausage sizzle will also be on offer to keep the mid-morning munchies at bay.
Divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the open day was the perfect opportunity for residents to have fun and learn practical ways to live more sustainably.
“This free event highlights the ongoing work Council does in the sustainability space, and shares ideas about simple changes our community can make around the home and garden to reduce costs, save energy and turn their waste into a home resource,” Cr Greaney said.
“These open days are a great way for the family to have an educational and fun day out over the weekend, with a focus on ‘living sustainably’ in our climate.
“In particular there will be advice on getting gardens ready for the wet season, including tips on improving the health of soils, plants, grasses and more, as well as saving water, reducing energy usage and supporting our much-loved native wildlife.”
Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto urged those yet to explore the Sustainability Centre to head along for a fun experience.
“The Sustainability Centre is an asset that Townsville can be proud of, and throwing the gates open for the day is a great opportunity for the community to see what the space is all about and to take tips and tricks home for their benefit,” Cr Dametto said.
The Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre Open Day is a free community event hosted by Townsville City Council to showcase practical ways residents can make their homes and gardens more sustainable.
The event connects the community with local environmental organisations, sustainability-focused businesses, and Council programs that support energy efficiency and waste reduction.
