Christmas crooners called for Carols stage auditions

Townsville City Council is calling on all singers to put their pipes on the big stage by auditioning for this year’s Carols by Candlelight.

The Christmas spectacular will return to Riverway under the big top tent on Sunday 6 December, bringing the community together to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year.

The event is now seeking singers to lend their vocals to the main show.

Councillor Vera Dirou said singers of all ages, backgrounds and musical genres should apply.

“Carols by Candlelight is one of our biggest community events, drawing in thousands of attendees each year, which is why we want to make sure the entertainment is top notch,” Cr Dirou said.

“We’re looking for main show vocalists first up, and our applications are open now. To apply for this exciting opportunity, just jump onto Council’s website and submit a video audition singing a song of your choice to demonstrate your vocal ability and performance style.

“There are no restrictions on your age or your vocal style as a main show singer, so even if you’re an up-and-coming young talent please go ahead and try out – you never know if you’ll end up on the big stage.”

For singer Claire Davies and her group The Sleigh Belles, auditioning for another year of Carols by Candlelight is a no-brainer.

“This will be the 13th year I’ve sung in Carols by Candlelight. Christmas is the best season of the year, and sharing it with 15,000 people makes it even better,” Ms Davies said.

“Watching all the kids at the front waving their candles around and hearing the immense sound coming back at you is a huge part of the experience. Nothing tops going up on stage and seeing how far the crowd spreads out, it’s wonderful.”

“My advice to newcomers is to pick a song you love for your audition – at the end of the day it’s Christmas so people want to see your joy on stage. If you’re a Christmas tragic and you want to be part of it, you should definitely audition – you have to be in it to win it.”

Applications to be a main stage vocalist are open now and close at 5pm on Sunday 23 August. Successful applications will be notified by 5pm on Friday 28 August.

Council will also be looking for pre-show performers and members of the community choir, with applications for these positions opening on 23 August.
