Project Background

Magnetic Island's water network relies on key infrastructure to safely store and distribute drinking water to homes and businesses.

The existing pump station and associated infrastructure at Bolger Bay are being upgraded as part of Council's ongoing investment in maintaining a safe, reliable and resilient water supply for the Island.

Project Overview

The Bolger Bay Pump Station Upgrade will replace ageing infrastructure to help meet current and future water demands across the Island. Works will be delivered by Tallai Project Group and are expected to commence late-October 2026, with completion anticipated in October 2027.

Project Benefits

Once complete, the project will:

  • improve the reliability of the water network
  • support future growth and water demand
  • increase the resilience of essential water infrastructure
  • maintain a safe and reliable drinking water supply across the Island.

What Works Are Coming Up?

Council and its contractor, Tallai Project Group, will begin site establishment works in late September 2026.

Works will include:

  • upgrading the existing pump station and associated infrastructure
  • removing the existing balancing tank that is no longer required
  • constructing a new chlorine dosing facility
  • installation of new mechanical and electrical equipment
  • testing and commissioning the upgraded system
  • restoring the site following construction.

What Does This Mean for Me?

Council is committed to minimising impacts on the community while construction is underway.

If you live near or are travel through the area, you may notice:

  • increased construction activity near the work site
  • occasional noise, dust and vibration during works
  • construction vehicles travelling to and from the project area
  • temporary traffic changes
  • potential water interruptions during critical cut-in activities
  • environmental management measures in place to minimise impacts on surrounding vegetation, wildlife and the nearby National Park environment.

To reduce the need for water supply interruptions during critical stages of the project, reservoirs will be topped up before works begin. The community may also be asked to conserve water during some activities to help maintain a reliable water supply across the Island. Advance notice will be provided if any planned interruptions or water conservation is required.
