Pest symposium a chance to share latest research, ideas

Townsville is in line to host a State wide pest animal symposium in the city next year.

Yesterday, the Smart City Sustainable Future Committee backed a plan for the council to support the event, which will attract about 200 delegates and exhibitors to the city.

The three-day event is held every two years and is considered one of the signature pest animal conferences in Australia.

Committee chair Cr Vern Veitch said this would have economic benefits for the city and an opportunity for an exchange of information and research on pest management.

"We were approached by the Pest Animal Branch of the Queensland Weed Society for Townsville to host the symposium in October 2016," Cr Veitch said.

"It’s crucial that local government is involved in an event such as this, being a key player in pest animal management in the community.

"The sharing of the latest knowledge and practices will ensure North Queensland remains relevant in the industry and will provide an opportunity to showcase its innovation and programs to a national audience.

"As well as offering professional development, the event will bring an economic benefit to the city thanks to the influx of participants from all over the country."

The recommendation to support the event through an $11,000 platinum sponsorship will be considered at the full council meeting on November 24.
