Defence personnel at Lavarack Barracks have been digging deep to assist this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal.

The red bins on base have collected food donations over the past month which will be handed to Mayor Jenny Hill today in a show of support to assist those less fortunate this Christmas.

Cr Hill said she was very grateful for the participation of the Australian Defence Force in this appeal.

"There are many people in our community who need a helping hand, especially at Christmas, so I’m thrilled the Army has come on board to lend a hand," Cr Hill said.

"The Army is a great supporter of the local community and this is just another way we can all work together to make Townsville the great community that it is."

Brigadier Roger Noble said 3rd Brigade was a part of the North Queensland community.

"We enjoy a wonderful relationship with the community and it gives us great pleasure to support a worthwhile cause for those less fortunate," he said.

The 2015 Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal hopes to raise $110,000 this year to assist more than 25 community groups deliver food, gifts and vouchers to around 5,800 residents in need.

Tickets in the major $10,000 prize draw are also still available at council’s Customer Service Centres on Walker St and Thuringowa Drv and this Sunday at the Cotter’s Markets. Tickets are $20 with only 2200 going on sale.
