Sporting clubs take the Sun Safety Pledge

Date published: 17 November 2015

National Skin Cancer Action Week, November 15-21, is a timely reminder for people to protect themselves from the sun this summer.

During the last two months, Townsville City Council has encouraged local sporting groups to take the Sun Safety Pledge, urging their members to take precautions when participating in outdoor activities.

Healthy and Safety City Committee chair Cr Gary Eddiehausen said more than 160 sporting clubs had signed up for the pledge.

"We have more than 400 sporting organisations in Townsville, so we hope that by getting as many of them on board as possible, they will in turn help us to push the sun safety message," Cr Eddiehausen said.

"We live in a very hot, dry climate and taking the sun safety message seriously is very important.

"North Queenslanders love to play in the sun, but it’s vital people use sunscreen, wear a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing and seek shade when outside."

Clubs that registered for the Sun Safety Pledge went into the draw for one of eight sun-safe marquees.

Winners were:

  • Townsville Water Polo Association
  • Parks Hockey Club
  • North Queensland Cricket Association
  • Alligator Creek Pony Club
  • North Queensland Fly Fishers
  • Highlanders Netball Club
  • Teachers West Rugby Union
  • Aitkenvale Stingers Swimming Club

Winners will be officially given their marquees at the launch at Townsville Bulletin Square on Wednesday, November 18 at 10.30am.

Karlie Armansin of Lancini Property and Development said they were proud to be a sponsor of a cause that spread such an important message and had such a hands-on, positive affect on the community.

"We encourage local sporting groups to get on board and join forces to spread the important messages around sun safety," she said.
