Horseshoe Bay protection works continue

Council will redistribute sand along Horseshoe Bay this month to balance out uneven levels caused by erosion.

The top-up sand renourishment works will happen between October 19 and 23 on Horseshoe Bay beach opposite the main shops on the east end of the boat ramp.

Smart City Sustainable Future Committee chair Cr Vern Veitch said the sand would be sourced from the eastern end of the popular tourist beach.

"It has been accumulating at the eastern end of Horseshoe Bay, so we are essentially relocating it to allow an even distribution across the entire stretch of beach," Cr Veitch said.

"This section of beach will be closed for five days during the works; however, the beach on the western side of the boat ramp will remain open during this time. The works will be completed before the stinger net is launched for the coming summer."

The renourishment works are part of regular erosion mitigation works carried out on the island.

Residents and visitors are urged to take care in the area while machinery is operating.
