Townsville mayor Cr Jenny Hill has welcomed matching funding from the State Government for an upgrade of the city’s scenic Castle Hill summit.

The State Government announced today an allocation of $175,000 from its Scenic Lookout Upgrade Program towards the council’s $350,000 Castle Hill Summit Improvements Project.

“With the support of the Government, the upgrade will ensure that the city’s iconic lookout is in great shape for the many tourists and locals who enjoy the hill’s panoramic views every day,” Cr Hill said.

“The work will replace and upgrade fencing, furniture, signage as well as improve paths that go to the various lookout areas on the summit.

“Castle Hill is our most loved landmark and having the summit looking its best is important for our city’s image.”

Design work on the project is underway and is expected to be completed over the next few months. Construction is scheduled for later in the year.

As well as undertaking the summit project, the council has completed repairs on the hill’s popular Cudtheringa Track this financial year.

Council has also started work on the Castle Hill Precinct Management Plan to guide the future management and delivery of facilities on the hill.

The plan is expected to be ready to go out to the community for comment early next year.

The master planning will draw on a range of relevant environmental, bush fire, erosion control and landslip studies and provide a plan for the development of new facilities for the summit and tracks, and protection of natural assets on the iconic hill.
