CBD utilities project moves to a new phase

The CBD Utilities Upgrade project will move up Stanley St on Monday as part of an upgrade to support new development and the revitalisation of the inner-city.

Works will require substantial excavations, detours and limited traffic access on Stanley St and Sturt St intersection, extending up the hill along Stanley St to include Walker St and Wills St intersections through to November this year.

Council’s Water and Waste Committee chairman Cr Paul Jacob said the utilities upgrade in the CBD was well underway in several locations, and requested the community’s patience and care around the worksites in the coming months.

“Temporary changes to traffic conditions from Monday, August 15 may create some disruption for commuters in the CBD with the partial closure of the Stanley and Sturt St intersection for road excavation works,” Cr Jacob said.

“Major excavations will be required in Stanley St during the next four months to install a large bulk water pipeline. The pipe will connect up the new pipeline installed during the 2015 works in the lower end of Stanley St. Drivers should take care with the changed traffic conditions and follow directional signage and detours where necessary.”
The Stanley St bus stop will be closed during the work and a temporary bus stop for buses outbound from the ferry will be established on Flinders St West outside The Powerhouse (turn right into Flinders Street from Stanley Street).

The CBD Utilities Upgrade project will work its way along Sturt St between Stanley and Stokes St installing water reticulation pipework, progressing excavation work along Flinders St West and working to schedule with under bore drilling of Ross Creek.

“Importantly, this work is an investment in the future of our city,” Cr Jacob said.

“Throughout these works, our CBD is still very much open for business and we want people to continue to support local businesses.”

Director of Townsville Water Keith Parsons said the project team was working closely with business operators, property owners and transport providers to minimise impacts as much as possible.

“Traffic management plans has been designed and approved to maintain access for businesses and to keep traffic flowing through the CBD as best we can around the work site,” Mr Parsons said.

Works along Stanley St will be carried out in a number of stages to minimise impacts on business and retain traffic flow through the centre of the city.
