Council launches consultation on city's markets

The community is being asked to put forward ideas and views on Townsville’s community markets.

Townsville City Council today launched community consultation as part of a review which was announced in May to boost the attraction and appeal of markets in the city.

A community survey is open on-line on the council’s website (www.townsville.qld.gov.au) and the community consultation team will be out and about at markets and community events until September 5.

Corporate Governance Committee chair Cr Verena Coombe said the council wanted to hear from residents, stallholders and businesses on their ideas to maximise the attraction and appeal of markets.

“Markets are important for community life and the activation of public places, and provide a great opportunity to support our traders, jobs, lifestyle, tourism and vibrancy in the city,” Cr Coombe said.

“The consultation is following through on council’s commitment to engage the community and hear the ideas of our residents and stakeholders as part of a review of the markets scene in the city.

“We want as many people to put forward their ideas on our markets, including flagship events like the Cotters Market in the inner-city.

“Gathering community feedback is important to maximise the attraction of the markets and ensure they’re being managed in a sustainable way.

“Council is consulting widely on the city’s markets, looking at the timing and coordination, the types of goods for sale and potential impacts on local retailers and residents.”

“The last time the markets were reviewed was seven years ago and the number of markets has grown to more than 15 across the city, so it’s timely to open them up for community comment.

“I’d urge anyone with an interest to go on-line or catch up with the consultation team at the markets and community events and have their say.”

The Townsville Markets Project and the outcomes of the consultation will be finalised later this year.
