Rockpool closures to go online

Date published: 8 December 2016

Rockpool users have been urged to check council’s website or facebook page before heading to the popular swimming spot after a fresh outbreak of algae was detected for the second time in a week.

Council closed the Rockpool yesterday afternoon after continued light winds and hot conditions produced further algal blooms in the bay, which were then drawn into the pool.

The Strand’s beaches remain unaffected due to the natural tidal action.

Community Health and Environment committee chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said the algae, known as trichodesmium or ‘red tide’, was common this time of year.

“The recent light winds and warm temperatures combined with calm waters have created ideal conditions for algal bloom,” Cr Greaney said.

“This is summer in North Queensland and red tide is common. Our website and Facebook page will be kept up to date with the status of the Rockpool and I urge residents to check it before heading down for a swim.”

“From a safety perspective, we need to keep people away from the algae until the water quality improves.”

Council are monitoring the situation and are undertaking water quality testing.

Signage has been installed at the Rockpool to advise people of the closure. Lifeguards will also inform visitors.
