Date published: 21 July 2016

As part of the four-year long Centenary of Anzac 1914 – 1918 commemorations, Townsville City Council will hold a memorial service and wreath-laying this Saturday, July 23.

The event will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Pozieres, Somme Valley, France which began on July 23 and ended on August 7, 1916.

Pozieres is the resting place of thousands of Australian soldiers with more than half of the Australians who fought killed, wounded or captured.

This loss was comparable with the casualties sustained over eight months at Gallipoli in 1915.

Australia’s 1st, 2nd and 4th Divisions and Britain’s 48th Division were involved in the Battle and five Victoria Crosses were awarded for bravery.

The general public and representatives of organisations and schools are invited to attend this memorial service which will be attended by the Mayor and Council representatives, defence representatives and ex service organisations.

To lay a book/wreath at the service please register with the Council Officer onsite on the morning of the service.
