Budget - Renewals funding for water and sewerage networks

Date published: 6 July 2016

Renewing mains, sewers and treatment plants in Townsville’s water and sewerage networks is a big priority in today’s City Budget 2016/17.

The budget allocates $18 million on sewerage infrastructure including rehabilitating sewers in older suburbs, and upgrades on treatment plants and pump stations.

An additional $17.6 million will be spent on upgrading mains and connections to improve water services.

The expenditure on the water and sewerage networks is in addition to key major infrastructure projects in the city’s big CBD Utilities Upgrade.

Water and Waste Committee chairman Cr Paul Jacob said water and sewerage infrastructure were an essential foundation for the city’s basic services.

“The budget includes funding for major new projects to support the city’s growth, but it’s important also to fund the on-going renewal and replacement of existing infrastructure to keep the city moving,” Cr Jacob said.
