Cleveland Bay Purification Plant upgrades to begin

Townsville City Council today endorsed the preferred tenderer for the supply of ultra-filtration materials that will be used in the upgrade of the Cleveland Bay Purification Plant.

Evoqua Water Technologies Pty Ltd was shortlisted from three tenderers to supply immersed hollow core membrane systems which perform a critical role at the treatment plant and contribute to its hydraulic performance.

Water and Waste Committee chair Cr Paul Jacob said the upgrade was essential.

“As preferred tenderer, Evoqua Water Technologies would supply the membrane systems to ensure the plant’s continued compliance with environmental licensing conditions,” Cr Jacob said.

Subject to final contract negotiations with the company, council will provide delegation to the CEO to award the tender.

The project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government together with the Townsville City Council.

Odour control upgrade works are also required for the plant, with council today endorsing a recommendation to increase the project by $330,245 (exc GST) to allow the completion of the defects rectifications works and commissioning of the facility by the Water Matters Alliance.

“The upgrade will protect the health and safety of council employees, contractors and visitors to the plant and protect its assets from the effects of corrosion resulting from high hydrogen sulphide levels,” Cr Jacob said.

“We also need it to ensure that environmental nuisance protection requirements are met in relation to encroaching development.”

Funds for the odour control upgrade will be made available through budget redistribution of renewals and upgrade works with lesser priority.
