Park upgrade and emergency markers in Rotary partnership

A partnership between council and Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise will see two projects undertaken that will benefit the city’s residents.

As a City Partner through council’s Together Townsville program, the club will contribute more than $70,000 over three years towards the installation of emergency markers along popular walking tracks on Castle Hill and an upgrade of a popular park in Kirwan.

The club will provide $10,000 towards the markers, plus in-kind support for the installation, and $60,000 for the upgrade of Thuringowa Park, which will be renamed Rotary Friendship Park.

Council’s Governance and Finance Committee chair Cr Verena Coombe said council was grateful for the club’s support in these tough times.

“We know service clubs are also struggling financially, so we thank the Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise for their significant contribution which will have a positive effect on users of the hill and the Kirwan park,” Cr Coombe said.

“Identifying the exact location of someone requiring assistance on Castle Hill has been challenging in the past, and these markers which will be located every 100m on the popular walking tracks, will help pinpoint the person.

“The emergency markers will aid those calling for assistance to identify their location and improve the ability for emergency services to quickly locate an injured person.”

The markers will be installed on the Goat Track, Cudtheringa Track, Dianelle Track, Ironbark Track and Castle Hill Road.

Meanwhile, the $60,000 Stage 1 funding of Rotary Friendship Park will include new irrigation, trees and fitness equipment, with work to commence later in the year.

“We know this park is already popular with families who use the playground and with dog owners who use the off-leash dog area, however the entire park requires some upgrades and this partnership will see the work come to fruition,” Cr Coombe said.

Sunrise Rotary Club president Paul Ryan said the hard work over the past couple of years was now coming to fruition.

“The club’s partnership with the Townsville City Council has resulted in benefits for the people of Townsville,” Mr Ryan said.

“Sunrise Rotary Club is one of 11 clubs in Townsville and all Rotarians work very hard for their communities and often what they do, and the assistance they provide to others, is not recognised or can often be overlooked.

“Clearly these two projects of the Sunrise Rotary Club are very visible and both will benefit our community from where we get so much support.”
