Improved lighting for city's dining precincts

Diners along Gregory and Palmer Sts will notice less glare and a nicer ambiance thanks to a Townsville City Council project to replace existing street lights with energy-efficient LEDs.

The replacement of lights is part of a wider LED Lighting Project that has already seen more than 600 LED lights installed in parks and public spaces across the city including the Strand, Riverway and Jezzine Barracks.

Infrastructure Committee chair Cr Mark Molachino said the project had seen successful LED street lighting trials in collaboration with Ergon Energy which demonstrated significant energy savings along with improved visibility and increased safety for residents.

“LEDs cost less to run, have less glare and provide a safer environment for diners,” Cr Molachino said.

“LED street lights play an important role in our Smart City future where council will save money in the long term through less maintenance and lower running costs, while continuing to provide quality services through adopting smart technology and collaborating with Ergon Energy.

“This is the beginning of a roll out of LED lighting across Townsville by council and Ergon which should eventually see the total inventory of street lights transitioned to the new technology.

“This rate of changeover is due to the prospect of further technology development and the length of life of the existing LED technology.”

Local contractors will replace the lights today and tomorrow.
