ISEC project to transform Townsville's inner city

The Integrated Stadium and Entertainment Centre will be the launching pad for development, job creation and lifestyle opportunities in Townsville’s inner-city, Mayor Cr Jenny Hill said today.

“Townsville will come of age as a Northern capital,” Cr Hill said.

“The ISEC will be the linchpin for the development of the Waterfront Priority Development Area along Ross Creek in the inner-city and the investment and jobs that will flow.

“As we have said all along, this project is much more than a stadium, it will also include an entertainment centre that will bring another vibrant dynamic to the inner-city.

“It’s the stimulus we need to provide confidence to the community, business and investors that Townsville has an exciting future.

“We now have an exciting opportunity to unlock the potential of prime areas of the CBD and create a world class inner-city precinct that will become a hub for tourism, commerce and lifestyle.

“Today’s funding announcement by the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull now puts the ISEC beyond doubt and I thank the Member for Herbert Ewen Jones for his work to secure the commitment.

“Once again Townsville has shown that we are a city of action with the exhaustive campaign to secure the support of both sides of politics at a State and Federal level to get the project over the line.

“Just as we did in our campaigns for government support for the Strand and Jezzine, the city’s business and community leaders were unified behind the ISEC and committed for the long fight.

“The council stands ready to work with the State and Federal governments and our local community to deliver a wonderful project for the city.”

The project now has commitments of $140 million from the State Government, $10 million from the NQ Cowboys and NRL, and $100 million at a federal level. The Townsville City Council will provide the site after recently acquiring 17 ha of former railway land in the inner-city for $9 million.
