Pacific Festival celebrations offer touch of nostalgia

One of the city’s most loved events, the Pacific Festival, will make a comeback this weekend to mark the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

The T150 4TOFM Pacific Festival will recreate what was an annual highlight on the city’s events calendar for more than 20 years.

Townsville will swing into party mode with a carnival at Jezzine Barracks, concerts and sunset jazz, a night car cruise and show, Strand night markets and a festival parade along the Strand featuring floats.

The crowning of the Pacific Festival King and Queen on Friday, June 3 at 5pm will kick-start the three days of festivities.

Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the Pacific Festival was a huge event in the 1970s, 80s and early 90s.

“This will be a wonderful community celebration and add a touch of nostalgia for the city’s long-term residents who will remember all the colour and atmosphere around the event,” Cr Greaney said.

“Crowning the King and Queen is a symbolic gesture, but also a way to acknowledge two residents for their contribution to the community.

“The calendar of events is jam-packed with entertainment and fun and there will be something for every age group.”

There will be a free Park ‘n’ Ride service from Dean St Car Park to Jezzine Barracks and back during event hours each day. This will leave every 15mins.
