A new Smartphone app developed by Townsville City Council as part of the city’s 150th birthday celebrations will be launched at CityLibraries Flinders St tomorrow.

The app offers residents and visitors a chance to step back in time and explore the history of Townsville.

The 45-minute self-guided walking tour will take participants on an adventure around the CBD including along the iconic Flinders St.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the app offered a great opportunity to explore the history of Townsville.

“The buildings featured on the app no longer stand today, it is amazing to see what use to house Townsville businesses along this iconic street,” Cr Doyle said.

“The stories included on the app are truly fascinating. Buchanan’s Hotel once occupied a lot on Sturt St, which housed American soldiers during WWII and welcomed President Lyndon B. Johnson during his 1966 presidential tour of Australia.

“We are very fortunate to live in a city with some of the most picturesque scenery, streets, and landmarks all boasting a unique story.

“Getting out and exploring the city on foot with audio from the app can really enrich your knowledge of the city, and point out some beautiful architecture that we take for granted during day to day life.”

With 13 stops on the trail, participants will discover notable buildings and the stories of the people who built and worked in them, the grand architecture of Townsville’s early streetscapes, the changing landscapes of the CBD, and the massive impact fire had in shaping Flinders St.

You can download the Townsville Tours & Trails app from the Apple App store for free from your smartphone today.
