Wastewater management, training needs and emerging risks are on the agenda of the Wastewater Source Management Network conference being held in Townsville this week.

Townsville City Council was one of a number of regional councils invited to join the network of trade waste professionals for the three-day event, which concludes today.

Townsville Water and Waste Director Keith Parsons said hosting the Water Services Association of Australia event in Townsville meant a number of North Queensland local governments could attend for the first time, including the Burdekin, Cairns, Cassowary Coast and Isaac Councils.

“This is a great opportunity for regional North Queensland councils to participate in a national networking event and to share information, coordinate research into best practice and improve consistency of trade waste management,” Mr Parsons said.

“Delegates are source control and trade waste managers from most major water facilities from around Australia and it has been a great opportunity to include our regional councils.

“The event has been very successful and a great opportunity for Townsville City Council to have input and share ideas.”

The agenda topics included:
* Wet wipes research and development of standards
* Potable reuse and source management
* Sewer quality guidelines
* Product appraisals and standards

The conference is being been held at Rydges Southbank Townsville and includes a site tour of the Magnetic Island Water Recycling Facility.
