Forum to build strong and sustainable community

Date published: 17 October 2016

A forum next month hopes to transform small ideas into potentially big social, economic or environmental change.

Registrations are now open for the Community Groups Built to Last Annual Forum being held on November 10 at Kith and Kin Townsville.

This year’s annual forum theme is Inspiration: Reflection: Connection.

Community groups are invited to attend and will be offered guidance on how to turn their ideas and projects into reality.

The forum will feature keynote speaker Patrick Lawrence, the Director of Humanitarian Services at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and manager of the Food Justice Truck, an award-winning, mobile fresh food market that enhances food security for people seeking asylum.

The forum will also feature an information session with presentations from The Townsville Drop In Centre, Project Booyah and ThinkConnect.

Breakout sessions will discuss building a successful crowdfunding campaign and design thinking for community-led innovation.

Council’s Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the Community Groups Built to Last was a platform which combined a series of events, workshops, web seminars and other information nights to build the capacity of the community of Townsville.

“The project provides information and engagement with the community to ensure the community has the skills, tools and ability to provide a sustainable future,” Cr Doyle said.

“The theme of year’s annual forum Inspiration: Connection: Reflection hopes to inspire and provide innovative examples of successful social enterprises.

“The day will look at three examples of projects that have come to fruition, in terms of sponsorship, planning and proposals and a chance to ask questions of the panel.

“We hope lots of community groups take this opportunity to participate.”
