Grocery grab a race to meet the demand this Christmas
Date published: 7 October 2016
The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal will receive a helping hand next week thanks to a race down the aisles of Woolworths in the CBD.
The second annual grocery grab with Mayor Jenny Hill and Food Relief NQ manager Toby Kelly will be a fun way to tackle the serious issues faced by many in our community during the Christmas period.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the support of Woolworths Sturt St meant that the appeal could continue to help a large number of people in need this year.
“We’ve had terrific support from the community and local businesses so far, and to have a major retailer like Woolworths get behind the appeal for a second year will make such a big difference to families in need,” Cr Hill said.
“Our focus this year is getting food on the table for families in need, so the grocery grab is the perfect way to draw attention to the food staples and delicious festive treats that we will require to fill those hampers.
“We are also looking for the community’s support, so I encourage residents to grab a non-perishable food item or two when they do their weekly grocery shop, and place it in the red Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal bins.”
Cr Hill said the items collected would be packaged at Food Relief NQ for distribution to community groups.
Woolworths Sturt St store manager Daniel Miles said he was pleased his store was able to assist again this year.
The appeal aims to raise $110,000 this year in cash, food and gifts, to assist local families.
Tickets in the raffle with more than $10,000 worth of prizes are also still available. The tickets are for sale at council’s customer service centres and a number of other locations.
