New exhibition tells story of Stuart Migrant Camp

Date published: 5 October 2016

A new exhibition to preserve the history of the Stuart Migrant Camp has opened at CityLibraries Flinders St.

Townsville’s New Australians: Memories of Stuart Migrant Camp features images and stories of the more than 600 people housed there during its peak of operation from 1950-52 and 1954-58.

The exhibition received T150 Anniversary Grant funding under the auspices of the Full Throttle Theatre Company.

As part of the project, the company will perform a locally written play – Displaced - inspired by the true story of a Polish couple who settled in Townsville after spending two years in the camp.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said all collated research would be added to the Townsville City Library archives.

“This exhibition helps to preserve the history of our city and its people and the information will be a very valuable addition to council’s records of the past,” Cr Doyle said.

“The exhibition also hopes to promote multiculturalism and awareness of the diversity in our community.”

The exhibition will be on display until October 28, and the play will be performed at the Old Courthouse Theatre Foyer November 16-20.
